#5 - Chorizo and Manchego Sliders at 6th Street Kitchen (RIP)

I stumbled upon 6th Street Bar and Kitchen while browsing menupages.com for a brunch spot.  I was meeting a friend for brunch in the alphabet city area.  I was looking at menus and for some reason, looked at 6th Street Kitchen.  I always enjoy interesting prix-fixe brunches, whether they include alcoholic beverages, coffee, etc.  I also enjoy prix-fixe brunch because brunches are a great time to get together with friends you don't get to see a lot, and having a prix-fixe makes settling that check much easier.

6th Street Bar and Kitchen offered a $13 brunch.  The brunch did not include alcoholic beverages or unlimited coffee.  But the entrees themselves sounded incredible.  They had chicken and waffles (which, if you read #7, you know I love), sliders, eggs benedict, eggs with pork belly, and so much more.  For brunch, $13 is sometimes a lot when it does include anything else.  My hope was that the food would speak for itself.

When I arrived at 6th Street Kitchen, I loved the atmosphere.  It was such an adorable place tucked away between Avenue A and Avenue B.  The menu presented a challenge though.  A burger always sounds good to me.  But a mushroom omelet with ricotta salata?  Also amazing.  How could I say no though to Chorizo Manchego Sliders, Saffron Aioli and Fries?  I do not know why it seemed like the natural choice over awesome eggs benedict and the ever enticing chicken and waffles, but the word "fries" and "chorizo" with the added bonus of "manchego" seemed great.
Sidebar: If you haven't noticed, the types of dishes that make my list are the dishes that combine my favorite things in a way that surprise me and blow my mind.  It is about combining favorite ingredients in a new and exciting way.

The sliders arrived, and they looked awesome.  Usually, sliders do not wow me.  Sliders frequently minimize the meat and maximize the bread.  Sliders seem like the type of food you get to share as an appetizer, or as a snack instead of a meal.  For example, I love going to Mark Burger and grabbing 2 sliders and a beer.  It feels better than getting a full burger.  But these chorizo and manchego sliders had a great meat and bread ratio - lots of meat and delicious bread!!  I managed to only eat 2, because they were so filling. I greatly enjoyed bringing the 3rd home.  And the fries were to die for.  I fell in love with this dish, the way I fell in love with the polenta and egg at Macondo.

A month after my visit, a fire broke out in the kitchen at 6th Street Kitchen.   The 6th Street Bar and Kitchen closed.  It was devastating to me.

I am so sorry this post was kind of sad.   Good things do not last forever.  Get it while you can.

Have a delicious day!
