#2 - Eggs Rothko at Egg

Egg is a popular brunch spot in Williamsburg.  Egg opens at 8 a.m, even on the weekends.  You do not want to try to get a table at noon, unless you have time to wait.  Unlike most popular restaurants that do not take reservations, you do not even get an estimated wait time here.  You sign up on a list with your name and party size.  They check the list and start calling parties out.  You can see the list, so you know what number you are, which hopefully indicates the difference between a 15 minute wait and a 90 minute wait.  When we went at 11:45 one day, there were 2 pages of the list.  On our second attempt, we arrived at 10:20 a.m and were probably 6th on the list.  We waited about 15 minutes, which was fine.  The name of the game here is that the early bird gets the worm.

I heard so many great things about Egg, but when I first looked at the brunch menu, I was not blown away.  Considering granola and sweet dishes are never on my list of options, half of the menu looked boring to me.  The other half had some intriguing egg dishes, but I was not sure what I really wanted.

The word that really stuck out to me was "Grafton Cheddar."  I love cheddar cheese, and I have had Grafton cheddar, which is delicious.  The Eggs Rothko consisted of an Easy-cooked egg in a slice of Amy's brioche and topped with Grafton cheddar. Served with broiled tomatoes and a side of meat or seasonal vegetables.  I got sausage as my side.

When the dish arrived, I was just mesmerized.  There was an enormous piece of brioche, with an egg sunken in the middle, and Grafton cheddar melted on the top to the point that it oozed on the side of the bread.  Although the dish was described well in the menu, the dish seemed even more phenomenal upon first sight.  Like I always say, a great place takes ingredients you normally love and puts them together in a way you did not expect, or that is more exciting than the typical combination.

Egg starts you off with brioche-type doughnuts, delivers amazing entrees, and even gives you crayons so you can color on the tables (not to worry - they are covered in white paper).  The food is delicious, the environment is whimsical, and the wait is worth it!

Have a delicious day!
