Peels, a restaurant located on Bowery, has created quite a buzz over the past few months for their delicious biscuits! I am a biscuit eater and was eager to try Peels. I arrived on a Saturday at 11:30 a.m. and was told the wait would be 20 minutes for a table, or right away for two seats at the bar. Bring on the bar!
Peels is a great space. It has a small downstairs, with a take-out counter and a few communal-sized tables. The upstairs is a bright space, with green and white decor, and its own bar.
Lets pause for a moment to talk about bar seating. Some restaurants offer their full menu at the bar, and instead of waiting for a table, you can enjoy dinner at the bar. I understand that there may be some drawbacks. You may not enjoy sitting on stools for long periods of time. If you are with a large party, it can be difficult to talk. You do not have as much space for all of the food and drinks because you don't have a table. But bar seating can also be awesome. If you want to have an intimate conversation with your guest, you probably won't have a server coming to your table to check on you that often. Usually the bartender will just take your order when you are ready. You can probably stay at the bar longer because if you sit at a table, it is possible that your table needs to turn for a reservation, so they need you out. And you can really be a part of the action, watching the bartenders run around and sitting arm-to-arm with other guests.
Back to Peels. In addition to several amazing breakfast and brunch menu items, Peels offers a build-a-biscuit. The biscuit is $3. Then, you add to the biscuit. You can add eggs for $3. You can add avocado for $2. Cheese is a $1. Fried chicken is $6. These biscuits can get pretty pricey, but you can really create something delicious and filling.
I got a biscuit with eggs, cheese, and avocado. That is a $9 biscuit. Alex got his biscuit with eggs, cheese, and fried chicken. So his biscuit came to $13. My biscuit is pictured above. It looks small on the plate, but it is enormous, messy, and delicious. It was totally worth $9, and I did not eat for at least a few hours after this biscuit. Alex's biscuit with fried chicken - wowzers. Fried chicken for breakfast is super delicious. It really took the biscuit to a whole different level.
So if you like your biscuits with complex choices and simply perfect flavors, give Peels a whirl. And, you do not have to wait for brunch - go for breakfast!
Have a delicious day!
