Ofrenda

Finding a good Mexican restaurant in New York City is a challenge.  When a new Mexican restaurant pops up on the scene, some feel hopeful that it may be the Mexican restaurant that we have all been waiting for, while others just brush it off.   When I passed by Ofrenda, a new Mexican restaurant on 7th Avenue in the Village, I decided to be one of those with hope.  I glanced at the brunch menu and saw that most items were under $10.   Under $10 is an automatic smile on my face.
When we arrived at Ofrenda, we were greeted by the Chef, who also served as a waiter that morning, seeing as we were the first to arrive right when it opened.  The restaurant itself is very nice looking, with GREAT outdoor seating on 7th avenue - perfect for margaritas and people watching.
The brunch menu is a nice representation of your morning favorites with flavorful Mexican twists.  I had seen an item on the menu online which to my dismay, was not on the menu at the restaurant.  I perused the delicious sounding omelettes, with options like avocado and manchego cheese.  My boyfriend was considering the burger, or Hamburguesa as it is called.  A hamburger with chipotle aioli on a potato bun sounds like just the Mexican flair for the morning.
But, the Chef came over and he was just so charming that we ended up going in a different direction.  First, my boyfriend drops the info that I had seen something on the menu, the Baked Eggs and Asparagus, with manchego cheese, serrano ham, and balsamic glaze, for just $10, and that it was no longer on the menu.  The Chef so lovingly offered to make the dish anyway!  And I said yes!  It also came with a salad and potatoes pictured above.  Look at that ham on top of those baked eggs and that luscious multigrain toast.  It was a total explosion of breakfast flavor.  I like eggs in a skillet-like dish, but this had so much more punch than my usual skillet eggs.  The glaze was great, and each bite was amazing.
My boyfriend decided that the burger was not enough of a Mexican dish, so he ordered the Chorizo con Huevos, spicy Spanish sausage, scrambled eggs, tomatoes, and guajillo pepper, for just $9.
HUGE DISH OF FOOD!!!!  More salad and potatoes.  Alex really enjoyed it!  After the Chef had told us so much about what it was like to open a Mexican restaurant and what it takes to survive in NYC as a Mexican restaurant, we felt we needed a meal that was a more traditional Mexican meal.
I say - go to Ofrenda!  Delicious food, apparently tasty drinks, a very friendly waitstaff, and great decor.  This Mexican restaurant is worth a try!
Have a delicious day!
