Subway Series. Baseball games played between NYC teams. But, baseball is over for the season. NYCMenuGirl brings you the Winter Subway Series, completely unrelated to baseball with no competitions and basically no similarities whatsoever.
Sounds exciting, maybe? Here is what we are working with readers. It is cold out. Really cold. And somehow we get through this weather every year. But when it first hits, it hurts. Your winter sweaters are in a bin under your bed. Your winter coat is hiding in the depths of your small NYC hallway closet. If you are me, it took you two weeks just to find the second glove.
What does this all mean? This means the days of skipping through the streets of NYC, stopping at street fairs, and sitting outside with a delicious cup of Yogurtland are over. Wow. Debbie Downer much? But winter brings a lot to look forward to, like hot chocolate (with a splash of peppermint schnapps perhaps), warm soup, lingering mornings in bed, and long nights of cuddling on your couch with significant others, roommates, friends, strangers (I don't judge), and animals, under a big blanket, or a freakin snuggie, hoping the heat will go higher, but your landlord controls that and so it doesn't and counting the minutes until your delivery pad thai arrives.
That really sounds great. I do not want to diminish the value of all of those activities. But, I have to tell you something. NYC still exists in the winter. It does not hibernate. Everything is open and ready for you. And one of the many things to love about NYC is that the weather does not stop the fun. We all still have birthdays to celebrate, holidays like Valentine's Day, St. Patrick's Day, heck President's Day, o and Groundhog Day, lets not forget. We want to meet people, eat good food, and drink. We want to see Broadway shows, buy new clothes, go to a museum. And we want to eat. O, and we want to drink.
This is like a winter get off your couch, life exists outside of your apartment, just put on more layers fool, and we will get through this therapy session. But how? Winter Subway Series Attack.
The Winter Subway Series will provide all of you beautiful people (everyone should be told they are beautiful on Mondays, don't you think?) with a restaurant review of a restaurant (oo shocking) that is less than one avenue and/or two streets away from a subway exit. I want to help you get out, and I think I can do that if I provide you with a restaurant that once you leave the hot subway, you will only be out in the cold for just a moment before arriving at your destination.
The First Subway Stop - 72nd and Amsterdam, 1,2,3 trains. Restaurant - HUMMUS PLACE.
Where it is located: 305 Amsterdam Avenue, between 74th and 75th. Exit the subway at 73rd street, and you are 1.5 blocks away from dinner.
I love Hummus. When my friend Lacy moved into the city, we decided to have dinner, and I wanted to find a vegetarian friendly place. Hummus Place is completely vegetarian, and everything on the menu is under $10. Good start. The restaurant has that cute, small, Village feel, which makes sense since the other locations of Hummus Place are in the West Village, East Village, and Greenwich Village.
We started with stuffed grape leaves, which were delicious, and then we each settled on our own hummus dish. I got the Hummus Tahini, which was only $5.95. I could not believe the amount of hummus in the bowl! It looked like a whole container. And it was served with pita bread and pickles. For $5.95, I have never felt so full before.
The menu is simple, and there is nothing too shocking about it. But for good hummus, close to a subway, at a really cheap price, this place fits the bill. They even have wine and beer, so go with a group, get a lot of different kinds of hummus, and a bottle of wine. That sounds like a nice little evening on a cold winter day.
Have a delicious day!
